#CloseToHome 52 – My Love of Hedgehogs
I am currently doing my 2nd 366, it’s another leap year; posting ( not taking!) at least 1 photo every day. My last one was in 2012
There will certainly be variety
This is number 184
This is part of my #CloseToHome series and can see the rest of them here
I have always loved hedgehogs; as a child we used to “keep” them as pets in our small garden, well at least we thought we were keeping them when really they came and went as they pleased. In my younger years they were a very common sight but the numbers in the UK have drastically declined, particularly in the last 25 years
I have lived in my house for 11 years. It has a very long garden that backs onto fields but in all those years, sadly and rather surprisingly, I have never seen any sign of a hedgehog. A few weeks ago I decided to buy a trail camera, to record what was happening at night. As hedgehogs are nocturnal I thought this would definitely show me whether there were hedgehogs visiting my garden or not.
Each night I put it in a different place in the garden and the 1st 2 nights it captured only neighbours cats and a squirrel but on the 3rd night, on my patio, there was one picture of a very healthy good sized hedgehog. See it below.
I was absolutely thrilled !
I started putting out food and water for it ( I spotted a 2nd in the background of one shot) and now it comes onto my patio at around 11 p.m every night. I took some photos with my “proper” camera and here’s one below. Cute or what!
All of the photos shown in this series will either have been taken in and around my house and garden, from the windows of my house, within up to 35 mins walk ( I walk slowly!) or 20-30 minutes cycle away from my house . They were all taken since 15th March, when I started my self-isolation.
Part of why I am doing this 366 is because I take a lot of photos, I love being out and about, but often they are not looked at for months or even years and this exercise encourages me to look at them and choose favourites. When my last 366 ended I made 4 photo books of my favourites. I intend to do that again.
