The photo competition everyone says they don’t want to win !

I belong to a camera club and each year one of the competitions is one that is jokingly ( or not ? ) called the competition that no-one wants to win, but that everyone would like to come 2nd in,so they have just enough glory with no responsibility. Odd that isn’t it?

Let me explain.

The competition is called Points of View and it’s set, and judged, by the previous years winner..

It’s a fun competition and the idea is that said winner chooses the place, this year it was in Saffron Walden, and the photographers, who take part, meet the winner there, are given instructions plus 5 theme titles and have 4 and a 1/2 hours to wander around the place, taking photos to match the theme. This is the first time I have done such a competition and really enjoyed it. The photographers have a week to prepare and submit the photos, which are judged the following week, on one of the club nights.

Are you getting it now?   Winning means you have to set and judge the next years competition and you have probably guessed by now that I won… YIPES!  My heart was thumping when the 3rd places were announced, then the second places and finally mine in first. In keeping with the idea that no-one wants to win I cried out NO!!!!! I demand a recount !

Now that I have got used to it I am rather delighted and looking forward to the challenge next year ( I think ! ) …

I thought I’d show you my photos under each theme heading with a bit of context if needed.

Round  1 – Amazing  – because there are several different types of Mazes in Saffron Walden

An Amazing Run (1 of 1)

Round 2 – Old  ( doesn’t get much older than this !)

Round 3 – The Bigger Picture – Any view/vista really

Round 4 – Trading – It was market day.

I love Cambridge Camera Club because it’s full of lovely, helpful people and there is always something interesting happening, but I am very glad I have a year to learn a bit about judging photos!

  1. Congrats to you Helen, a most enjoyable set and what a challenge for next year. I like the competition format because of the way it engages club members.

  2. A super selection – well done! I particularly like the unusual viewpoint in the first image and the resulting rhythmic movement of the composition. I’m sure you’ll make an astute and understanding judge offering helpful, constructive comments.

  3. Sounds like a lot of fun. Congrats! ( I think!) You’ll be a wonderful judge. I remember when I was asked to be part of a judges panel of 3 for our picture framers guild contest. It is a prestigious award, and I was nervous, but it turned out to be a great experience. Enjoy the honor!
