Guantanamera – For all the Traveleyes Gang

.

3 old men- one violinist, one guitarist and one with maracas

Yo soy un hombre sincero, De donde crece la palma,
Yo soy un hombre sincero,
De donde crece la palma,
Y antes de morirme quiero Echar mis versos del alma

Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

Mi verso es de un verde claro,
Y de un carmin encenidido,
Mi verso es de un verde claro,
Y de un carmin encenidido,
Mi verso es un cierro herido
Que busca en el monte amparo.

Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira Guantanamera

Con los pobres de la tierra,
Quiero yo mi suerte echar,
Con los pobres de la tierra,
Quiero yo mi suerte echar,
El arroyo de la sierra,
Me complace mas que el mar.

or by The Fugees & Wyclef Jean ( my favourite) a sort of reggae version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKW4fosRmlU

or how about a rather bizarre Ska version of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ucf59XUW628

Ps – actually no-one in the Traveleyes gang saw this little group except myself and Jane; on the night we went off to walk the Malecon in the storm ( photos of the seafront wind and waves to come) and ended up at a very authentic local restaurant. The musicians didn’t actually play Guantanamera either so lots of poetic license here.

This became the theme tune of the Cuba trip because everywhere we stopped to eat, out came the musicians and invariably played this song. It’s fair to say it did get a bit tiresome after about the 10th time!

  1. Great image and that is a wonderful song that I know so well – I can even sing it – But I’m struggling to remember the singer of the version I know so well

  2. This song does rather get into your head after a few (dozens of) renditions. Thanks for the reminder of the lyrics. I’ll probably start singing it to myself again for weeks to come!
